The Akpata Magazine is accepting submissions for their upcoming issue,  inviting creative voices of folklore and literature across Africa to participate.

Akpata Magazine is the literary magazine of the Department of English Language and Literature at the University of Benin. Their name draws inspiration from the “Akpata,” a traditional Bini storytelling instrument. Just as the Akpata serves as a vessel for telling tales and passing down knowledge, our magazine aims to be a platform for the creative voices of our department and beyond.

Submission Guidelines

  • Each manuscript must be the original work of the entrant. Plagiarism or derivative content are not accepted.
  • Manuscripts must be in the genre of Fiction, Essay, Poetry, Drama. Each genre must contain a word count of 5000 words, 3000 words, 4 poems (each poem under a page) in length, 1500 words respectively.
  • AI generated submissions are not accepted.

All entries must be submitted through the submissions portal on the official Akpata Magazine website in the following format: Double-spaced, standard font,  your name, contact information, and a brief bio (2-3 sentences) on the last page of submission.  The subject line should follow this format – “Genre -Title”.
